The Regional Review meeting of the National Ayush Mission (NAM) was ceremonially inaugurated.

Key Highlights of the National Ayush Mission (NAM)

  • Union Minister of Ayush Sarbananda Sonowal emphasised the rich heritage and potential of traditional forms of medicine in India.
  • He stressed the importance of integrating these traditional systems, including Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani, Yoga, Naturopathy, Sowa Rigpa, and Homoeopathy, with modern medicine to enhance healthcare outcomes
  • Sonowal highlighted several robust Ayush programs aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles and addressing specific health needs.
  • These include Ayurveda for school children, ‘Supraja’ for maternal and neonatal interventions, ‘Vayomitra’, a geriatric program based on Ayush principles, and initiatives for the prevention and management of osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Under NAM, the Ministry of Ayush is working on operationalisation of 12,500 Ayush Health and Wellness Centres (AHWCs) through support of State/UT Governments by 2023-24.

What is the National Ayush Mission (NAM)?

  • Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM) is a flagship scheme of Ministry of AYUSH approved and notified in 2014
  • National AYUSH Mission (NAM) was launched during 12th Plan for implementing through States/UTs.
  • The scheme involves expansion of the AYUSH sector to promote holistic health of Indians.
  • The Mission addresses the gaps in health services through supporting the efforts of State/UT Governments for providing AYUSH health services/education in the country, particularly in vulnerable and far-flung areas.
  • AYUSH means Traditional & Non-Conventional Systems of Health Care and Healing Which Include Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy etc.

Objectives of the National Ayush Mission (NAM)

  • To provide cost effective AYUSH Services, with a universal access through upgrading AYUSH Hospitals and Dispensaries, co-location of AYUSH facilities at Primary Health Centres (PHCs), Community Health Centres (CHCs) and District Hospitals (DHs).
  • To establish a holistic wellness model based on AYUSH principles and practices to empower masses for ‘self-care’ to reduce the disease burden, out of pocket expenditure and to provide informed choice to the needy public.
  • To strengthen institutional capacity at the state level through upgrading AYUSH educational institutions, State Govt. ASU&H Pharmacies, Drug Testing Laboratories and ASU & H enforcement mechanism.
  • Support cultivation of medicinal plants by adopting Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) so as to provide sustained supply of quality raw-materials and support certification mechanism for quality standards, Good Agricultural/Collection/Storage Practices.
  • Support setting up of clusters through convergence of cultivation, warehousing, value addition and marketing and development of infrastructure for entrepreneurs

Funding Pattern for NAM Implementation

  • 90:10 in Northern Eastern States, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir.
  • 60:40 for other states and UT with legislature exceptions is J&K)
  • 100:0 for other UTs without a legislature.

Key Achievements of the National Ayush Mission

Achievements under Centrally Sponsored Scheme of National AYUSH Mission (NAM) till date(31.03.2021):-

(1) Total 104 up to 50 bedded Integrated AYUSH hospitals in different States/UTs have been supported.

(2) Total 296 AYUSH Hospitals and 4717 AYUSH dispensaries have been supported for the Upgradation of infrastructure and other facilities.

(3) Total 2878 PHCs, 840 CHCs and 350 DHs have been supported under co-location for recurring assistance of medicines and contingency on an average in each year.

(4) 1965 Yoga Wellness Centres and 512 AYUSH Gram units supported.

(5) Grant in aid has been provided for the establishment of 11 New AYUSH Educational Institutions.

(6) Total 72 Under-Graduate and 33 Post-Graduate, AYUSH educational Institutes have been supported for Upgradation of infrastructure, Library and other things.

(7) 36 ASU & H Pharmacies and 29 Drug Testing Laboratories have been supported for strengthening.

(8) 4448 units of Ayush Health & Wellness Centres (HWCs) have been approved. 1041 HWCs are progressive functional.
