PM Vishwakarma Scheme

On the special occasion of Vishwakarma Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, which he had announced during the 77th Independence Day address from the Red Fort.

Key Features of the PM Vishwakarma Scheme

  • The scheme aims to strengthen and nurture the Guru-Shishya parampara or family-based practice of traditional skills by artisans and craftspeople working with their hands and tools.
  • PM Vishwakarma yojana has been fully funded by the Centre with an outlay of ₹ 13,000 crore.
  • Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME) is the Nodal Ministry for the Scheme.
  • The Scheme will be jointly implemented by the MoMSME, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and the Department of Financial Services, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.

Objective of PM Vishwakarma Yojana

  • The scheme is designed to address the challenges faced by professionals engaged in traditional crafts and skills, often passed down through generations within their families.
  • This includes artisans such as carpenters, goldsmiths, masons, laundry workers, barbers, and others engaged in traditional crafts and skills.
  • The scheme has ambitious coverage goals, aiming to support five lakh families in the first year and eventually reaching 30 lakh families over five years.
  • It also seeks to integrate Vishwakarmas into both domestic and global value chains.
  • Under the scheme, the ‘Vishwakarmas’ (traditional artisans) will be registered free of charge through Common Services Centres using biometric-based PM Vishwakarma portal. 
  • The scheme offers a stipend of Rs 500 for skill training per day and Rs 15,000 grant for the purchase of modern tools.

Eligibility Criteria for PM Vishwakarma Scheme

  • Applicants must be Indian citizens and reside in India to be eligible for this scheme.
  • The minimum age for PM Vishwakarma Yojana application is 18 years, with no upper age limit.
  • Eligible applicants should be involved in traditional artisanal or craftsmanship activities.
  • The annual income of the applicant’s family should not exceed a specific limit, as defined by the government. This limit may vary based on the applicant’s category, such as general, SC/ST, or OBC.
  • The scheme particularly targets marginalized and socially backward communities, including the Other Backward Classes (OBC) groups

What Does the PM Vishwakarma Scheme Provide?

The Vishwakarmas will be provided

  • Recognition through PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card
  • Skill upgradation involving basic and advanced training
  • A toolkit incentive of ₹ 15,000
  • Collateral-free credit support up to ₹ 1 lakh (first tranche) and ₹ 2 lakh (second tranche) at a concessional interest rate of 5%
  • Incentive for digital transactions and marketing support.

Vishwakarma

  • Vishwakarma, a revered figure in Hindu mythology, is regarded as the divine architect of the gods, a master craftsman, and a divine carpenter.
  • He is celebrated as the patron deity of workers, artisans, and artists, responsible for crafting the gods’ weapons, cities, and chariots.
  • The scheme takes its name from this emblematic figure, symbolizing the recognition and empowerment of skilled laborers.
