Key Points On UN 2023 Water Conference
- The UN 2023 Water Conference is formally known as the 2023 Conference for the Midterm Comprehensive Review of Implementation of the UN Decade for Action on Water and Sanitation (2018-2028).
- It took place at UN Headquarters in New York.
- It was co-hosted by Tajikistan and the Netherlands.
- It will be the second UN Conference dedicated to water after the one held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 1977.
- UN has launched a global campaign called ‘Be the Change’to mark World Water Day 2023.
UN 2023 Water Conference Commitments
- Water Action Agenda – The 700 voluntary commitments will form the Water Action Agenda.
- The US- $49 billion in investments to support climate resilient water and sanitation infrastructure and services.
- Japan- 500 billion yen to the solution of water-related social issuesfaced by the Asia-Pacific region by developing quality Infrastructure
- Vietnam– Develop policies for major river basins management by 2025 and to ensure all households would have access to clean running water by 2030.
- The African Union Commission, along with the Continental Africa Investment Programme (AIP), aims to close Africa’s water investments gap by mobilising at least $30 billion per year by 2030 through a range of initiatives.
- The Government of Mozambique– Investments of $9.5 billion to achieve SDG 6 which deals with Clean Water and Sanitation.
- In Europe, the EU aims to support the access of 70 million individuals to an improved drinking water source and/or sanitation facility by 2030.
- The bloc will also support Member States with €20 million in funding to accelerate the deployment of wastewater surveillance for COVID-19.
- Switzerland submitted 5 commitments to contribute to the UN’s work, including in the areas of the Water Convention and transboundary cooperation. Switzerland is the co-chair of the Interactive Dialogue on Water for Cooperation.
- India has committed investments of over $240 billion in the water sector and is implementing the largest dam rehabilitation programme in the world as well as efforts to restore groundwater level

- According to the World Meteorological Organization, around 3.6 billion people struggle to get enough water to meet their needs for at least one month every year.
- Despite safe water and sanitation being a human right, billions of people lack access to these essentials for life, as stated by the United Nations.
- The world’s growing population, coupled with economic development and changing consumption patterns, means that the demands on water resources are far greater than 50 years ago.
- The gap between water demand and supply is estimated to be 40% by 2030, with a dramatic and unequal increase in demand between countries
