- It’s a public boat service integrated with the metro rail network.
- The project is being implemented by Kochi Metro Rail Corporation with the financial assistance provided by a German funding agency.
- The main objective is to link ten island communities in Kerala’s city with the mainland, resulting in shorter travel times and more cost-effective transportation.
- Last year Kochi Water Metro won the prestigious Gussies Award (France) for the best commercial passenger electric boat in the world.
- They have the ability to carry up to 100 people on the proposed 76 km route and produce nearly zero sound and vibration while running.
Features Of India’s First Water Metro
- It is manufactured by Cochin Shipyard Limited
- The metro project will run eight electric hybrid boats on two routes namely, High Court-Vypin route and Vyttila- Kakkanad route.
- Once fully operational, the project will connect 10 islands around the port city using 78 electric boats and 38 terminals and will ferry around 34,000 passengers on a daily basis.
- Equipped with cutting-edge safety devices and advanced technology, the ferry ensures smoother commutes and more efficient travel experiences.
- The boats in the Kochi Water Metro are powered by batteries and require only 10 to 20 minutes to traverse each route.
How Is The India’s First Water Metro Linked To The Metro Rail?
- Kochi Water metro has been envisaged as a feeder service of the Kochi metro rail, which has been operational since 2017.
- While boats have been designed as coaches of Kochi Metro, boat terminals, passenger entry and exit gates, ticket counters and safety measures mirror the features of the metro rail service.
- All jetties feature electronic display boards about boat service. Announcements will be made in English, Hindi and Malayalam when the services are operating in full swing. Passenger entry and exit to boats, with air-conditioned cabins, are similar to the system in Kochi metros.
