The annual Global Liveabilitiy Index ranking of the world’s most liveable cities has just been released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), 2023’s Global Liveability Index

  • This year, the index covered 173 cities and for the second year in a row, Vienna, Austria, has been named the best city to live in the world.
  • Many developing nations have shown incremental improvements in their liveability rankings.
  • Asia-Pacific cities have demonstrated significant progress, while Western European cities have slipped in the 2023 rankings.
  • The report highlights the growing emphasis on healthcare and education in Asian, African, and Middle Eastern countries, signalling a positive trend.
  • However, it also notes a decline in stability scores attributed to civil unrest in certain parts of the world.
  • New Delhi and Mumbai are at 141st position and Chennai at 144th. Ahmedabad and Bengaluru are ranked 147 and 148, respectively.

Factors Influencing Global Liveability Index Rankings

  • The index score improved globally to a 15-year high as the world recovered from the pandemic.
  • Average index score increased from 73.2 to 76.2 out of 100.
  • Stability was the only category that saw a marginal decline due to civil unrest, cost-of-living crises, and an uptick in crimes in some cities.
  • Western European cities slipped in rankings due to increased instances of workers’ strikes, while cities in Asia and the Middle East made gains.
